The tried and true main-stream practice of whole breast irradiation (WBI) following lumpectomy has an excellent record that spans over 3 decades. The WBI procedure includes an all-important “boost” phase. Treatments delivered with the proprietary AccuBoost Applicators, commonly referred to as the “AccuBoost process”, allow your radiation oncologist to deliver the boost dose under real-time image guidance. Recently, the AccuBoost process is being used for Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) where the entire course of radiation therapy is delivered in 5-10 days. Characteristics of the AccuBoost process are listed below:
• Non-invasive radiation delivery in a simple outpatient procedure
• Using real-time image guidance, your radiation oncologist can target the target
tissue with high confidence
• Conformal radiation field – your radiation oncologist can match the target size,
shape and location of the radiation field to your specific needs|
• Minimal dose to healthy tissue as the radiation is focused on the intended target
sparing exposure to the heart, lungs and the uninvolved breast
• Uniform radiation field
• Homogenous treatment – no hot or cold spots in the field
