Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art practiced around the world. The Aikido of West Bend dojo is an affiliated dojo with the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba headed by Mitsugi Saotome Sensei, 8th Dan and a direct student of the founder, Morihei Ueshiba. Aikido is a modern martial art founded in the last century by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to as O Sensei. It is a martial art that emphasizes a non-violent approach to conflict and strives to achieve harmony with nature, others, and oneself. The word Aikido consists of three Japanese words that can be translated as "the way of harmony with the universe."
Ai - Harmony, or Unity
Ki - Universal energy
Do - Path, or Way
Rather than fighting, Aikido challenges us to meet the energy of an attack with relaxation and a sense of center. Using fluid, spiral movements, we turn around an attacker's energy so that it defeats itself.
