Two Sergeants Die in First Fatal Accident at Tyndall Field -July 4, 1942
Staff Sergeant Karl Berg, 22, of Long Beach, Calif, and Staff Sergeant John H. Liles Jr, 21, of Bailey, NC, were killed about 10 a.m. yesterday when their training plane crashed about 10 miles north of Tyndall Field during a routine training flight.
Sergeant Pilot Berg was a flying sergeant pilot. His next of kin is his mother Mrs. Nona M. Berg, 1880 Lewis Avenue, Long Beach, Calif. Sergeant Liles' Next of Kin is his father, John H. Liles, Route 3, Bailey, NC
In the swampy area the plane in which the two men met their death crashed into a swampy almost inaccessible area. Cause of plane crash has not been determined. The accident is the first flying fatality at Tyndall Field during its 14 months of operation, during which more than one solid year of flying time has been recorded.
