In 1998 a young visionary and his wife answered the call of God to start a church - a church that would revolutionize a city and forever change the life and destiny of thousands of people. Armed with a contagious mission, an insatiable passion and love for God, Pastors Sergio and Georgina De La Mora, along with a team of seven other people, left Santa Barbara and began Cornerstone Church of San Diego.

On March 1st, 1998 Cornerstone Church opened its doors for the first time, welcoming 60 people into the cafeteria of Hilltop High School. Over the next six years, every Sunday that high school turned into a “Holy Place”. Each week, a group of dedicated men and women would set up for 4 hours every Saturday and Sunday. Every cable, every light, every backing track, every green plastic chair was a heart to be turned. On January 25th, 2004, Cornerstone Church held its last service at Hilltop High and broke down one final time. With Pastors Sergio and Georgina leading the charge, they loaded up a caravan and crossed over from Chula Vista to National City to begin a new chapter which included a home for more people, more families, more teens, more chairs, more hearts.

With the unanimous approval from the City Council, Sweetwater Theatres in National City would no longer be known as a place for family entertainment but instead a place where families are healed, marriages are restored, and children are celebrated! For the next two years, Cornerstone, grounded with the same passion for God and His people and the same contagious mission, continued to experience supernatural growth. More and more people came from all over San Diego, bringing with them anyone they could to give their loved ones an opportunity to meet God at a church where no one had to be perfect, just willing to be perfected. The city had grabbed a hold of this mission to turn hearts and the history of National City began to change.

On April 30th, 2006, Cornerstone Church held its first service in the Supernatural Dome and families who had for two years been separated by an overflow sanctuary could now worship together- it was sound that would continue every week as Pastor Georgina and her worship team ushered the congregation into the transforming presence of God. After 8 years, the greatest need was still the same-more chairs for more hearts.

As the tent continued to fill up, Cornerstone embarked on a building campaign to officially launch the remodel of the former Sweetwater Theatre's. Just two months into the campaign, God challenged them to not only establish a future for the church but also for the Turning The Hearts Center, the community arm that reached out to youth and families in the community to provide education, leadership development and family enhancement services. The challenge came through an opportunity to purchase a property for the Turning The Hearts Center. Cornerstone once again believed in the greatness of God’s provision and aggressively pursued the promises of God not only for His Church, but for the community as well.

During this “Decade Of Turning Hearts”, God has changed the course of thousands of lives as they have come through the doors of Cornerstone, sat in a mercy seat, and allowed Him to rewrite the story of their lives. But the need to expand, to make room, to add more chairs has never changed. Ten years later, another chapter in the extraordinary history of Cornerstone is being written- a chapter that begins with their decision to once again say yes to the mandate from heaven to fill Cornerstone Church with as many mercy seats as they can - mercy seats in their brand new sanctuary, mercy seats in the children’s classrooms, mercy seats in their newly unveiled youth center, mercy seats that will forever stand as a testimony for Pastors Sergio and Georgina De La Mora and the families of Cornerstone Church of San Diego that their best days are still ahead of them!
