The First Wesleyan Church in Ypsilanti began in 1943 as the result of the passion and prayers of both adults and teens within the Pilgrim Holiness denomination. Through meetings, area youth helped birth this church through prayers, finances, and other resources. Rev. Herbert Diller was appointed as evangelist for the church. The building itself was a portable tabernacle which had been built in Owosso, MI and had been part of the headquarters of the Pilgrim Holiness church at one time. In the mid 1940's property was purchased as a permanent home for the building.

In 1949 a basement was completed and a small addition was added to the building. In 1956 additional property was purchased, and in the next few years an addition was built along with a parsonage.

Rev. Kenneth Smith directed these building efforts. He and his wife Addie (an ordained pastor) had a dynamic ministry. Attendance reached its highest point during their ministry together.

Through the years, First Wesleyan Church has focused on reaching out to its neighborhood (especially children), teaching the Word of God, and giving to people in need. We've survived many challenges as has the Ypsilanti area and we look forward to God's plan for our future.
