Handy Stop Nursery, owned by Alan & Shirley Sommer, is a retail garden center located in Yoakum, Texas. The county line between Dewitt and Lavaca counties runs through the nursery just back of our 16,000 square foot greenhouse.

Handy Stop has a very humble beginning when a Nebraska man (Leonard Zila) and an Iowa woman (Shirley Houk) married, moved to Texas, built a convenience store and then decided that maybe the locals would buy vegetable plants as well. Leonard and Shirley, both from the farmlands of America who also lived through the Great Depression, didn't know much about the nursery business but they did know two important things: QUALITY & VALUE!


And now, 40 years later, the importance of QUALITY & VALUE has always been priority. The flats of vegetables on the sidewalk offered seasonally has now has become ten's of thousands of plants and trees sold annually.
