Weddings Inspired by the Legend of the Naupaka - "Hawaiian Legend"
According to local Hawaiian legend, two lovers, greatly devoted to each other, came to the attention of the Goddess Pele. Pele found the young man desirable and attempted to woo him away from his beloved. No matter what Pele did however, the lovers remained devoted to each other.
Infuriated, Pele set out to destroy the young lovers. To escape Pele's wrath, the couple fled to the sea. Pele's sisters took pity on the couple and stepped in to save them by turning the young woman into the Beach Naupaka and turning the young man into the Mountain Naupaka.
These two flowers individually make only a half flower. Legend has it if you put the two half flowers together making one complete flower, the young man and the young woman are joined together once again giving luck to the couple who join these two halves together.
