A seasonal shelter providing safety, support, and self-sufficiency to women, children and families
The Homeless Center for Strafford County is a not for profit over night emergency shelter helping single women and families in the seacoast area. The goal of HCSC is to provide homeless clients with professional case management assist the residents with the resources and support they need to overcome barriers to homelessness so they may become productive, self sufficient individuals with the means to support themselves and their family. In addition to case management, HCSC has been fortunate enough to provide classes to its residents to adopt new skills to become more effective parents and learn to identify nutritious options.
The Homeless Center for Strafford County is located in Rochester NH in Waste Management. Waste Management has generously donated the shelter house to HCSC, free of charge, since 2001. Without the generosity of Waste Management, the HCSC would not be able to serve those in need of safe shelter.
The Homeless Center for Strafford County is licensed to house up to 26 in-house residents at one time. HCSC has 5 family rooms, 1 single female room, and over flow space in the play room. The playroom provides a wonderful and enriching environment where children in a stressful situation can play and engage in age appropriate games.
The shelter is open 24 hours a day during the operational season. With only 6 paid staff, HCSC relies heavily on the generosity and participation of volunteers. HCSC has been lucky enough to have around 50 volunteers in the 2013-2014 operational season, but are always looking to recruit new volunteers! Volunteer shifts range from 2-5 hours and can be scheduled weekly or monthly. Call the shelter to schedule a volunteer training session.
The Homeless Center for Strafford County loves donations! On our website there is a full list off the items the shelter needs! To organize a donation drop off, call the main office. Our donation drop off times are 8:30am-1:30pm Wednesday and Friday.
