Trail Rides, Riding Lessons, Cabin Stays, Fishing, Archery, and Lots more!
North Georgia natives, Dr. Ken and Brigitte Humber moved to Cherokee County in 1979. Wanting to move further into the country, they bought a beautiful plot of land at the base of Pine Log Mountain in Waleska, Ga in 1985. They moved there after building their lake, barn, and house. A close friend penned the name “Humberland” to their property, and the name has stuck ever since. Dr. Ken, an Orthospinologist, practiced in Smyrna, and both he and Brigitte took care of Humberland. Brigitte majored in music at Reinhardt College and took up gardening, filling Humberland with flowers and music. They bought horses when their two girls, Michelle and Crystal, were little and started riding and learning about horse life. Throughout this time, the Humbers took numerous trips to the west: Montana, Colorado, and especially Wyoming.
In 2001, their oldest daughter, Michelle, attended a guide school in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming at Bridger Wilderness Outfitters. She loved the experience and continued to work at the ranch after guide school was finished.
Tired of the commute between Smyrna and Waleska, Dr. Ken and Brigitte decided that Ken would take an early semi-retirement from his private practice. Tim Singewald, owner and operator of Bridger Wilderness Outfitters, needed ranch managers and thought Brigitte and Dr. Ken would be perfect for the job. In the summer of 2002, they packed up three of their horses, their cowboy boots and hats, and headed west.
Over the next three summer and fall seasons, Brigitte and Ken guided pack trips and trail rides in the Wind River and Gros Ventre Mountains. They saddled horses and packed mules. They cooked in dutch ovens over an open fire and entertained guests with their wonderful singing and playing skills. When they came home to Georgia for the winter and fall months, they concentrated on turning Humberland into a guest ranch. After three years, they were ready to leave the summers at Bridger Wilderness Outfitters and focus all of their attention on Humberland Guest Ranch.
Dr. Ken and Brigitte continue the ranch tradition today. They built a beautiful log cabin to house overnight guests. Dr. Ken has built numerous horse trails around Humberland and the surrounding property. And they are constantly adding new facets to the ranch. Right now, they are in the process of completing a gorgeous pavilion that sits by the lake. The ranch offers trail rides, pack trips, overnight ranch stays, archery, fishing, and much more. It is absolutely beautiful all on its own, but there are flower gardens everywhere to add to the ambiance of the place. The vegetable garden helps create the delicious food served at Humberland. But more than anything else, it is Brigitte and Dr. Ken who make Humberland Guest Ranch. These two wonderful people are so warm, inviting, funny, and incredibly talented, you will find yourself wanting to come back again and again.
