In the past, our first project was committed to improving the lives of the children at Mbaka Oromo Primary School in Western Kenya. The school has nearly 700 students and most of them are orphans. In partnership with an organization at Cornell University that works at the school, we were able to purchase two 5,000-liter water tanks and install electricity in classrooms, exceeding our expectations.
In the future, JSO's next project is to provide each member with shoes, uniforms, stationery, and a third water tank. The shoes and uniforms will enable the students to prevent obtaining diseases like scabies and cracked feet. Some of these students have never worn shoes and by providing this necessity, the students will be able to walk the long distance to and from school without foot injury and being subject to contacting disease. Staying healthy enables these students to remain in school to focus on their studies, instead of focusing on health concerns. JSO wants children to stay in school without feeling alienated and with the proper attire for health and safety.
The stationery is needed for the children to have paper to write on while they are learning their lessons. Last but not least, the additional water tank is for land irrigation because there is a farm that the community can use to continue planting their own crops. The produce will provide food for the children while at school at no cost. The school can sell any excess produce and use the funds to contribute to help buy stationery for the students.
