Kapowui offers professional surf lessons (private or group), paddle board lessons, surf tours, rentals of kayaks, surf boards, paddle boards, wetsuits and more.

At kapowui, we live, eat, and dream surfing. We teach surfing because we want to share our love and stoke for surfing. All of our instructors are imbued with the Aloha spirit. Kapowui believes we are all part of one big family, so when we are doing a lesson, we are 100% focused and in the moment with you. All of Kapowui's instructors live within blocks of the beach and surf every day. This is a life choice for us. We are not a corporate machine grinding out massive quantities of sub-par internet coupon lessons with minium wage non surfing employees. Kapowui is a locally owned business with soul that only hires real surfers. Kapowui truly care about your experince. So, when you do a lesson with us, you get the opportunity to feel the true surfer vibe, and gain a skill you can use forever. Your lesson will take place at one of 4 iconic California beaches, Venice, Marina Del Rey, Malibu, or Santa Monica, where the sandy bottoms are safe and perfect for beginner lessons. Your lesson includes surfboard, wetsuit, and instructor. We ofer 1 hr., 1 1/2 hr., and 2 hr. lessons. The first 20 minutes of each lesson is done on the beach, covering board design and dynamics, wave dynamics, beach safety, surfing safety, surf etiquette, pop-up technique and form. The remainder of your time is spent in the water, surfing with your instructor. Everything is included, you only need to bring a positive vibe, however people often like to bring sunscreen, towel, and water. We are licensed, permitted & insured & sponsored by O’neill, one of the biggest names in surfboard, surfwear and equipment in the world!

Surf /SUP lesson are 1, 1.5 , or 2 hours, & includes a soft top surf board, wet suit, 25 minute beach lesson & the rest of your time in the water SURFING! Beach lesson includes surf board anatomy, how to stand up, paddle for waves, surf etiquette and safety. Most beginning lessons take place at the world famous Venice Beach. Fiberglass & epoxy short and long boards are available for advanced surfers. Where: Most lessons take place in the Santa Monica/ Venice Beach area.

Founder Martin Squires with one surfboard living in an RV started sharing the stoke of surfing to all comers. Wanting to maintain his life style yet needing to pay the bills he started doing surf lessons as a pirate (no permit from the city) and 4 short years later, his business has grown from 1 surf board to 50, with 10 employees, licensed, insured, permit with LA county. Martin knows he is blessed and thanks all those who have made it possible for him to continue living his dream by sharing the stoke of surfing.

We specialize in surf tours up and down the California coast, teaching surf lessons in the Santa Monica, Malibu, and Venice Beach areas. My name is Martin Squires, and I am the founder of Kapowui. I have been surfing since 1987. My team and I are licensed, permitted and CPR certified. Safety is our top priority, and we welcome all ages and skill levels!
