Kyokushin kaikan (極真会館) is a style of stand-up, full contact karate, founded in 1964 by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. Kyokushinkai, when translated into Japanese, reads as "the society of the ultimate truth". The roots of Kyokushin kaikan stem from a philosophy of self-improvement, discipline and laborious training. Its full contact style has led to widespread international appeal and over 12 million have practiced it over the past 40 years in over 120 countries.

Kyokushin Spirit:

"The heart of our karate is real fighting.
There can be no proof without real fighting.
Without proof there is no trust.
Without trust there is no respect.
This is a definition in the world of Martial Arts."

Kyokushin Philosophy:

Keep your head low (modesty), eyes high (ambition), mouth shut (serenity); base yourself on filial piety and benefit others.

FAQs:

Q: What is karate?
A: Karate is commonly translated as “empty hand” in Japanese, and refers to the practice of fighting with bare hands.

Q: How is karate different from kickboxing and other fighting arts?
A: Karate is a martial art originating in Japan in a similar way as Tae Kwon Do originated from Korea, Kickboxing from Thailand and Capoiera from Brazil, etc. Historically, most martial arts techniques are in some shape or form derived from China.

Q: What makes Kyokushin karate different from other fighting styles?
A: Kyokushin Karate is not merely a form of self defense. Its concept lies deeper than simple physical cultivation. Mas. Oyama believed that Karate should not be violent, it should deny violence instead. In essence, Mas Oyama's ultimate endeavors in Karate are spiritual enlightenment, mental cultivation and human quality.
Then again each martial art system has differences in training methods and philosophy, some undistinguishable, some major, but specifically, Kyokushin practitioners believe that one cannot truly understand the art of bare hand fighting without actually experiencing it. Kyokushin students therefore practice how to fight in a realistic manner, and most often in the controlled environment of the Dojo, to examine their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses as well as their own. In this way, Kyokushin “karate-ka” (karate practitioners) strengthen their character while gaining insight into the human spirit.

Q: I have never done karate before; do you have classes for beginners?
A: Beginners are welcome to nearly all classes on the schedule, and yes, we do offer basics-only classes. Kyokushin methodology is centered on good basic training and all ranks benefit vastly from training together. For students who wish to fine tune their skills or who prefer one-on-one training, we do nonetheless offer private training sessions that can help students set personal goals and see them through to fruition.

Q: Am I out of shape or too old to start karate?
A: No! Kyokushin karate provides authentic martial arts training appropriate for all ages and physical abilities. Kyokushin today has students as young as 4 to over 80 years old practicing. It’s never too late to benefit from Kyokushin karate! But please consult your physician before starting any new fitness regimen.

Q: How many belt ranks are there between white and black belt?
A: There are five belt colors with 2 rank levels (‘Kyu’) each, between the white and black belts. All beginners start at white belt and proceed through the ranks by periodic examination. We offer testing periods bi-annually and they are optional to participate in.

Q: Can I compete in tournaments?
A: Yes! The IKO has an extensive tournament circuit with events scheduled locally, regionally, nationally and all over the world in any given month. Beginners should consult with their Instructor if interested in competition; special training sessions and professional coaching will be available soon and complimentary to potential competitive Team candidates.
