Last Black Man in San Francisco

A story of two misfits from Hunters Point and their adventures through a rapidly changing city.

Currently, we are in the pre-production phase. We have a full-length screenplay, a trailer for the film, a creative team, and a collective dream to make this film. We are still trying to raise money and expand our team before we start shooting - so if you know someone or ARE someone who can help us financially or artistically, please reach out to us -- info@longshotfeatures.com!

Director Joe Talbot and leading man Jimmie Fails have been living and breathing this project for years. The future collaborators first crossed paths as kids while Jimmie was living in the nearby Army Street projects and found an almost brotherly draw to one another, despite their differing upbringings. The film was birthed by many late-night conversations about Jimmie’s strange and sometimes surreal past. As he and Joe wandered aimlessly through their neighborhood into the wee hours of morning, Jimmie would spin weirder-than-fiction tales of his childhood, including the days when he and his father made a beat-up BMW their home, until his dad’s crackhead buddy stole it, or when Jimmie’s sister died of gangrene — a disease Jimmie had thought only killed off wounded cowboys in old Westerns.

In our fictionalized version of Jimmie’s odyssey, “The Last Black Man” is not just Jimmy’s drama, but a buddy film — his unique bond with his eccentric childhood friend, Prentice Sanders, is the strongest personal tie that holds him to the city of his birth. In a fundamental way, the two united outsiders are polar opposites: Prentice is a whimsical character who tends to float above life while Jimmie confronts it head-on. But Prentice also serves as the endlessly patient friend to whom Jimmie weaves his dream of one day buying back his lost childhood home — the dream that keeps Jimmie clinging to San Francisco. This deep friendship of opposites withstands many ups and downs (and sideways), as the two young men navigate their way through a city that makes them feel more and more like strangers in a strange land. As their story unwinds, the dramatic tension in the film will come not just from the growing uncertainty of whether Jimmie can stay in San Francisco, but whether the most important relationship in his life will survive.
