The Work of More Than 2,000 Pair of Students' Hands!
Mala`ai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School is a 3/4 acre organic hand- worked garden at Waimea Middle School. Serving all 280 students at the school, Mala`ai celebrated its 5th anniversary of “hands in the soil” health and wellness learning for students, families and the larger community in March 2010.
Mala`ai is our Hawai'i's “model” school garden where every Waimea Middle School student is connecting math, science, language arts, social studies and cultural learning with healthier, sustainable food choices. While it’s hard, rigorous work, it’s also fun to be outdoors learning about the magic of seeds, compost, worms and sunshine, and to participate in the great pleasure of eating fresh delicious food grown with our own hands!
