POVERTY IS NOT NATURAL

The great Nelson Mandella said:

"Like slavery, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and can be eradicated by the action of human beings."

If poverty truly is man-made, what action can you take to change that trajectory?

HOW DO WE DEFINE POVERTY?

We measure well being (consumption and income) by:
- How much we earn
- Where we live
- What and how much we eat
- Things we acquire and use every day
- Whether we go to school every day
- Whether we go to a doctor we we're sick

2.5 billion out of the 7 billion people in the world live in poverty according to the World Bank:
- 50% live on < $2.50 a day
- Of the 1.3 billion people who live in absolute poverty around the glove, 70% are women

2.5 billion people lack access to financial services. No credit. No collateral. What are their options? Not a bank. Not a loan shark.

Mentors International provides a program of business skills training, mentoring, and financial services to impoverished entrepreneurs in the Philippines, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Peru (and soon in Ghana, Africa). Mentors is different not because of what we do, but how we do it. Over the past 25 years, Mentors has made a substantial impact by helping 3.6M entrepreneurs on four continents leave poverty.
