Habitat is a Christian ministry that builds decent, affordable homes for lower income families. Families are selected through an application process.
In 1991, a group of local citizens got together and decided to form an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. Some of the early organizers included Danny O'Beirne, Helen and Buddy Rayne, Father David O'Connor, Connie Burns and many, many more. The first home was completed in late 1993 and now the organization is ready to start construction on its 18th home (2013).
Habitat is funded by local donations, grants and principal payments from existing homeowners. The major fund raising event is the annual Charity Day sale sponsored by the local Belk Store. Belk has raised about $120,000 in the last 9 years by seeking corporate sponsors for these events. All proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity.
