We are a 2 acre urban farm and youth employment program. We sell produce though annual CSA farm shares and at our farm stand every Thursday 4-6pm.
New City Urban Farm is a 2 acre farm in the Creston neighborhood of Grand Rapids. The farm uses the best biological practices available to grow a wide spectrum of vegetables. We amend our soil annually with rich compost and we never use synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or GMO seeds to ensure our food is delicious and healthy.
We sell a majority of our food through CSA farm shares. Shareholders pay an upfront fee at the beginning of the season in order to receive a box of fresh produce weekly from June-October. We set up our pickup like a farmer's market so our customers are able to have a good amount of choice in what they decide to bring home. Our staff are always available to answer any questions about new vegetables and can offer recipe ideas too. In a typical year our customers save 25% on their produce, making a CSA farm share a great way to save money. We offer Full shares meant for a family of four ($475), half shares meant for two ($275), and a quarter share that is picked up every other week ($175). We are also able to accept EBT and Double-up-food-Bucks for share purchases. Double-up-food-Bucks provide customers with a 50% discount on their shares, and we can work out a payment plan for all EBT customers. We strongly believe that fresh veggies should be available to everyone! Email for more share info at lancek@newcityneighbors.org.
We also sell produce at our weekly Farm Stand every Thursday 4-6pm June-October (1226 Union NE). We accept EBT, SENIOR fresh, and Double-up-food bucks. This season we are very excited to be joined by the YMCA Veggie Van during our stand hours. The Veggie Van will bring along fruits, vegetables we might not have that week, nuts, honey, eggs and some prepared foods too! We hope this will make our stand a one stop shopping experience.
Most exciting of all, our farm exists to employ our neighborhood high school youth. The farm is a program of the faith based community development organization New City Neighbors. In 2014 we will hire 8 student employees and teach them valuable life and job skills through work (the best way to learn!) and through a weekly interactive curriculum. Students are involved in all aspects of the farm including customer service, marketing, newsletter writing and design, record keeping, and much more. If you are in high school and live in the Creston neighborhood go to our website www.newcityneighbors.org/farm to apply online.
New City Urban Farm is a CSA farm (community sustained agriculture). What this means is that at the beginning of the growing season community members sign up to purchase a share of the farm. Each member of the farm is then entitled to a share of the farm’s produce in the form of a weekly box of fresh produce. As a co-owner in the farm, a share holder takes on both the risk and the reward of each unique growing season.
