One autumn afternoon, I was hiking through one of my local state parks in southern Pennsylvania with my two sons, wife and my 135-pound Newfoundland puppy, Izzy. Once again captivated by nature for its beauty, resilience and peace, I had to stop and think about what is all around me that I may have passed by on numerous hikes in the past. As we continued along the trail, kicking the multi-colored leaves that recently fell from the trees, I began to pay close attention to the majestic pieces of nature towering over me.

Trees play such a crucial role in our lives and fulfill so many needs that we desire. However, very few people actually appreciate the role and importance of nature in our existence. As our walk continued, I once again was mesmerized by the stunning trees, now laying on the ground, fallen from weather, time, and age, that most people walk past without a second thought – the same trees that play a key role in my life as a wood worker. As we rounded a bend in the trail, a barn appeared in the distance that I previously escaped me.

We approached the barn, my wife and I both looked at each other, simultaneously in awe of how spectacular this particular barn was. We walked closer, and noticed the detail on each weathered board. I ran my hand across its grain and felt the fibers in my palm. Feeling its rough, century-old bones, I imagined the harsh winters and brutal summers it has endured in its life. With every passing year, this barn and every board that holds it together changed, creating a unique beauty that only nature could design. Now, with Izzy by my side, and my family enjoying some quality time together, I realized my calling. It was that moment when Newfoundland Woods was born.
