About Brian Mitchell
I started training in Gracie Jiu-jitsu in the fall of 2004. I was at the gym and a friend showed me an arm bar. At the time, I was competitive in Power lifting and Strongman competitions. I was a lot bigger and stronger than my friend, yet he beat me easily when we wrestled. I was very intrigued by this and when I asked where he had learned these techniques, he told me about his instructor J.W. Wright and his jiu-jitsu academy. The following Saturday I showed up to check out the Gracie Jiu-jitsu classes at Grappling Concepts and have been there ever since. What started out in the beginning as training every Saturday, quickly turned in to six to seven days a week and a complete change in lifestyle.
After a few months of training, I competed at the Arnold classic in Columbus, OH. I was fortunate to do very well there and come away with a Gold medal in my first competition. Needless to say, that lit a fire in me that burns to this day. Since then, I have continued to compete in a variety of tournaments and invitational’s at a local, national, and world level. I feel very fortunate to have been blessed with a lot of success in competition and I continue to strive for improvement and look forward to future competition.
I owe my success in large part to my instructors and training partners at Grappling Concepts. To make a complete competitor, you need a strong team. In our academy, we have a very giving mentality. We believe that if you make your partner better, you in turn become better. When everyone is constantly striving to make those around them better, the result is that everyone succeeds.
I would like to encourage you to take the time to experience jiu-jitsu and what it can do for you. Whether you are an accomplished martial artist, a complete beginner, or anything in between, jiu-jitsu has something for you.
See you on the mat!
