Mantokuji is a Buddhist temple of Japanese Soto Zen lineage. Located in Paia Maui and established 1906.
Brief History
Paia Mantokuji Soto Mission was founded on November 7, 1906 by The Reverend Sokyo Ueoka of Hiroshima, Japan. The original site of the temple was adjacent to the present Paia Fire Station. The present temple building was completed in
1921.
Sokyo Ueoka’s son, Sokan, and grandson, Shuko Stanley, became the second and third resident ministers, respectively. The fourth minister was The Rev. Seigo Hanuki from Fukushima, Japan and the fifth minister was The Rev. fli Otani of Tokyo, Japan.
The Mission endured the internment of the second minister, Sokan Ueoka, during World War II, and survived the Tsunami (Tidal Wave) of 1946.
From 1938 until 1965, the Mission operated a crematorium, and from 1937 until 1941, sponsored a school for sewing and cooking called the Kasei Women’s School.
