Philomath. You're Home. - (541) 929-2454

Looking for a place to call home? Look no further. We are a close knit community with small town traditions, big dreams, safe parks, and great schools.

Here are the six reasons why YOU are at HOME in Philomath:

1. RICH HISTORY

Philomath was named after Philomath College, founded by the United Brethren Church in 1867.. Philomath means “love of learning,” and that need to learn continues through today, Incorporated in 1882, the City’s farming and agricultural economy was soon bolstered by a major boom in the logging industry that emerged from the area’s lush, wooded timberlands.

As lumber production soared, the original city lots plotted by the founding fathers filled with homes, schools, churches and businesses designed to serve the increasing number of workers and families drawn to the area by good-paying jobs. Event though Logging is no longer the main economic driver, one drive through Philomath still shows our ties to history. These two “personality” traits work in unison at the Philomath High School, which is home to a top-ranked Forestry program and the incredible gift that is the Clemens Scholarship, which was funded by a logging family generations ago.

Closed in the late 20’s, Philomath College is now home to the Benton County Historical Museum, where visitors and residents alike can learn about its origins and pay tribute to those who shaped its past.

Philomath has and will continue to diversify both economically and culturally, but a love of learning and rich logging traditional will be ever-present.

2. BRIGHT FUTURE

Philomath experienced dramatic growth in the 1990’s as the area’s employment base diversified and became less and less dependent on timber. The emergence of a high-tech economy in neighboring Corvallis spilled over into the local community, as a growing number of technology workers and other professionals chose to live in or build businesses in Philomath.

Now with a population of over 4,560, the city’s economy boasts home-grown internet, telephone and utility providers along with a variety of employers that manufacture high-tech instruments, conduct genetic research, do animation for Disney, build solar batteries and much more. An even larger number of major employers in nearby communities have also helped grow Philomath into a preferred bedroom community for those employed elsewhere. These workers chose to live and raise families in Philomath because of its affordable housing, high marks for livability and a commitment to education.

3. SENSE OF COMMUNITY

Known as the City of Volunteers, Philomath prides itself on residents who support their neighbors and look after one another. Philomath Community Services is home to one of the best food banks in the nation and the only one of its kind in Oregon operated completely by volunteers. Churches and civic organizations like Rotary, Lions and Odd Fellows also step in to help fill local social service needs.

Funded by local donations and built by a volunteer workforce, Philomath Youth Activities Club provides many of the area’s youth sports and summer activities programs. Thriving AYSO and Little League organizations offer additional recreation opportunities.

Annual events such as the Philomath Frolic & Rodeo, Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire and Philomath Classic Car Show also serve as an opportunity for residents to gather and celebrate, while often providing visitors their first exposure to the charm and unique nature of Philomath.

4. LOVE OF LEARNING

As explained, Philomath literally means “love of learning,” and its commitment to education continues to be stronger than ever.
In 2013, Philomath welcomed a brand new high school as the newest addition to an educational system that already ranks among the state’s very best.

A traditional 12-year public school system along with charter, alternative and private schools ensure all local families can choose a learning environment that best fits their children’s needs. An expanded public library keeps pace with the community’s needs for access to information and offers a range of educational services that include children’s story times, a mobile library and more.
