The land was largely donated by the Drake family and could have been known as Drake Cemetery during its early years. There are up to six generations of Drake family members buried in the cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many that lived in this community including the Brown, Camp, Capps, Johnson, Laughter, Prince, and Summey families.

According to the book "Postmarks" by Lenoir Ray, the Pleasant Hill Community was known as Delmont. It had a post office that was established on July 20, 1881. At some point the name was changed and is today called Pleasant Hill. According to Ray the name Pleasant Hill was derived from "Pleasant Hill" the estate of William Johnstone, son of Andrew Johnston who built Beaumont. William built Pleasant Hill in 1839 and sole it to Dr. Means in 1858.
