Rudd Art Museum presents “Figuring In” for summer 2014
STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR
Rudd Art Museum is about the Berkshires and the artists who reside here; our inaugural exhibition “Figuring In” drives this message home. Fourteen artists from across the county -- Cheshire; Great Barrington; Lenox; North Adams; Pittsfield; South Lee; and Williamstown – converge to demonstrate the remarkable artistic talent living and working in our backyard. The Berkshires, of course, are rich in museums, but only RAM focuses on regional names. That’s the cultural niche – the void – we are pleased to fill. MASS MoCA, the DownStreet Art festival, and a vibrant artistic community make North Adams the heart of our county’s visual arts scene. Our hope: RAM will facilitate a means by which all Berkshire artists can more easily contribute to this energy.
The title of this first exhibition “Figuring In” communicates three messages. First, it reminds viewers that the depiction of the human form remains a vital pursuit for today’s artists. Secondly, the inclusive list of our participants shows that RAM is not just for North Adams or North County artists, but a venue for all Berkshire artists -- in short, everyone figures in. Lastly, RAM’s principal purpose is to contribute to the cultural verge of this city, and with this exhibition, we announce our arrival.
“Figuring In” celebrates the talents of: Paul Chojnowski; Kris Galli; Lisa Griffith; Meryl Joseph; Casey Krawczyk; Leo Mazzeo; Julia Morgan-Leamon; Viola Moriarty; William Oberst; Doug Paisley; Michael Rousseau; Joel Rudnick; Brent Whitney; and David Zaig.
With utmost gratitude, we extend thanks to our initial supporters: Barbara and Robert Bashevkin; Bona Marketing; Cire Corporation; Deanna and David Atwell; Donald W. Dix; Lynch Scrimo Attorneys; Massachusetts Cultural Council; Mountain View Painters; Outlook Builders; R. I. Baker/Ribco Supply; r. k. Miles; Scieszka Mechanical; Smith Watson & Co. CPAs; and Sommer Electric
