Sarasota Youth Opera - (941) 366-8450 Ext 249

Come discover why SYO is more than just singing.

Since 1984, the Sarasota Youth Opera has given countless young singers an opportunity to experience opera through participation in Youth Opera Choruses, in Sarasota Opera’s Winter Festival, and in the Youth Opera’s own productions. Accepting all who apply regardless of skill level or ability to pay, this program is unique in the opera world.

Youth Opera Summer Workshop

A three-week, hands-on workshop held at the Sarasota Opera House every June that immerses young people in all aspects of the operatic art form. Participants study many facets of opera – from music and acting to opera appreciation and technical production – under the direction of Sarasota Opera’s professional and artistic staff.

Youth Opera Productions

Sarasota Opera’s commitment to youth opera includes the performing and commissioning of operatic works written specifically for children and young adults. Since 1986 five commissioned world premieres and over 20 additional youth opera productions have been presented. The Fall 2012 world-premiere of Daron Hagen and J.D. McClatchy’s Little Nemo in Slumberland incorporated 106 students from throughout the community, including students from Booker High School, Out of Door Academy, and Sailor Circus.

As part of the worldwide centennial celebration of composer Benjamin Britten’s birth, SYO will present Britten’s opera The Little Sweep in November 2013. Set in the early 1800's the opera tells the story of Sam, a young chimney sweep who is befriended by the children of an upper-class house who in turn engineer his escape from endured servitude.
