News, information, and happenings on the Rockton Rion & Western Railroad, a non-profit volunteer operation owned by the SCRM.
Founded in 1983, the SCRM moved to the Rockton location and immediately began restoring the former Rockton & Rion railroad, famous for operating steam locomotives into the 1960s and hauling Winnsboro Blue Granite, "The Silk of the Trade" Restoration of 5.1 miles of track has allowed for a very scenic and fun excursion to Rion, site of a former rock quarry. Former Army and Air Force diesel locomotives provide the power, pulling historic coaches, cabooses, open cars, or a dining car. The railroad is now called the Rockton Rion & Western, named for the mostly western direction it travels to Rockton. Dinner trains are also operated, as are special events such as the Easter Bunny Eggspress, Pumpkin Patch Train, and Santa Express.
