WHO IS STEW?
James “Stew” Stewart was given the nick name “Stew” by his high school buddy and it stuck. It was right about that time, Stew feeling the educational environment was leaving him bored, decided to go to barber school through a ROP program at his high school. At seventeen years old in 1977 he began the odyssey known as barbering.
After spending 5 years working for other people, Stew decided in 1983 at the age of 23 to open his first barbershop in Aurora, Illinois. This was a labor of love. Stew as a child remember going to the neighborhood barbershop were the guys who worked there were fun and the shop was cool.
Stew created an old school barbershop with a twist. Inside you will find a fun filled family atmosphere that includes, antique porcelain barber chairs, a train that runs around the barbershop, Three Stooges on the walls with sports memorabilia from all generations. One shop has a full size version of the Lost in Space robot, and another has a life size version of Sully from Monsters Inc. Unique and unusual is the order of the day.
In 1991 Stew moved his family to Temecula, California and opened a Stews in Murrieta.
After a successful response he processed to open more shops throughout Temecula, Menifee, Murrieta and Ladera Ranch. When he opened the Ladera Ranch store in Orange County that is where the next generation of Stews had begun. His son James started the shop at age 20 and later was joined by his daughter Brittny and then followed by her husband Mark.
Now semi retired Stew still enjoys cutting hair three days a week. He fills up his spare time hanging with his wife, playing pool, and off-roading in his Jeep. Stew still continues to open barbershops in Southern California and feels extremely thankful towards his customers for keeping his dream alive for so long.
