Safety Town is a miniature version to scale of the City of Sturgis with roads, sidewalks, buildings, and working stop lights and cross walk lights. Children learn proper pedestrian and bicycle safety on a realistic training ground.
A major component of Safety Town is a two week summer program for students entering kindergarten. During the two week camp students will attend class for two hours daily including classroom instruction and practical application.
Topics of study include pedestrian, bicycle, bus, internet, and personal safety. The camp utilizes police, fire, emergency communications operators, school personnel, and the electric department to provide safety lessons to the campers.
