ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Betsy Jacaruso received her BFA with honors from the Pratt Institute of Art and Design in Brooklyn, NY in 1979. She has since gained the reputation of being a gifted instructor who teaches drawing and painting techniques as a way of realizing individual vision. Her students find her mastery of watercolor painting invaluable in the process of learning to handle the complexities of the medium.
Betsy’s current work explores atmosphere and luminosity in landscape, and has been featured in both regional and international exhibitions, as well as represented in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. In February 2013, one of her newer paintings, “Edge of Light,” was even featured in the print copy of The New York Times. Locally, her work is on display at her Gallery & Studio in The Courtyard in Rhinebeck, NY.
Betsy has also proven to be very active in promoting the arts in her community. In 2005, she received the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award, and she also co-chaired the Red Hook Community Arts Network from 2010-2012. Currently, she is helping to organize the 2013 Art Along the Hudson Kick-off Event in Rhinebeck.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Georgia O’Keefe, one of my chief inspirations as an artist, once said, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” My relationship with art throughout the years has echoed this sentiment.
As an introverted young girl, I found that drawing was an outlet through which I was able to express my thoughts and emotions. As I grew older and pursued art further, by receiving expert guidance at the Pratt Institute, I was able to utilize my love for the arts and cultivate my natural drawing ability into a wide-ranging, poised skill. In each of my paintings and drawings, I seek to apply my learned aptitude in both composition and draftsmanship into a work that reflects my unique personal style and vision.
Through my lifelong relationship with art, including my formal training, fervent study of the works of others, and ability to travel to remarkable new places, I have matured into the artist that I am today. All of the opportunities and experiences that I have had have taught me how to better express myself through my work, while enabling me shape my professional career as a watercolor artist.
