The Jaguar Project - (415) 203-9137

We are working to establish long-term conservation measures to protect the habitat of the jaguar throughout Central America.

The Reventazon River Valley is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular natural wonders, as well as one of its best-kept secrets. Spanning a lush mountainous gap between the Central Volcanic Cordillera and the Cordillera de Talamanca, it is the only place where large mammals can safely cross between two of Central America’s most important ecosystems.

The Reventazon Valley forms the heart of the Barbilla-Destierro Biological Sub-Corridor, an important region that has been highlighted by multiple scientific studies as being the weakest link in Costa Rica’s jaguar corridor.

The most serious threat to this beautiful region is the construction of the Reventazon Hydroelectric Project. Areas of the corridor face disintegration as Central America’s largest dam will flood the valley with an artificial lake in 2016. This 8km-long reservoir will effectively block migration routes for jaguars and five other native feline species, including ocelot and margay. These routes are of particular importance to the protection and proliferation of the jaguar, which is threatened throughout this range by ranching, poaching, and increasing loss of habitat and prey.

In order to strengthen the corridor we are seeking to preserve several strategically located properties throughout the valley. By pairing environmentally concerned investors with these important conservation properties, we hope to create a contiguous series of protected zones adjacent to the new lake that will secure this region as a safe habitat for Costa Rica’s rich and unique biodiversity.

The opportunity to invest in the conservation of wildlife is more important than ever. Our investment program provides a model where investors can either privately purchase land for personal use - in alignment with specific conservation guidelines - or they may choose to invest in several classes of conservation properties collectively.

Conservation requires a strong appreciation and understanding of nature, as well as an incorruptible ethic of natural preservation. This includes prohibition of hunting, deforestation, and pesticide use. Our property purchase program strongly encourages reforestation, minimal development, and diligent protection of native species. We have designed a land-management package that includes resources to assist with restoration, preservation and reforestation. All of our properties are eligible for generous Costa Rican government subsidies that provide for assisted reforestation and other wildlife protection programs.
