The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff, Inc. (SNA) - (928) 213-5900

“Enriching lives by mobilizing residents to create continual improvement” is SNA’s mission.

Current Organizational Programs/Projects/Initiatives for 2015-2016 include:

The Market of Dreams (Mercado de los Sueños) - The Market of Dreams/Mercado de los Sueños is a community cooperative multi-cultural market and small business/micro-entrepreneurship center. Not an economic project and not a cultural project, but an ambitious endeavor designed to weave together both in a collaborative way.

RadioSunnyside - The intent of the RadioSunnyside Radio station is to provide residents greater access to information concerning the Sunnyside neighborhood and greater Flagstaff area (for example information regarding neighborhood meetings and special/culture events, areas of construction, promotion/location of area businesses, etc.). RadioSunnyside is a multi-cultural, neighborhood station that provides programming in English, Spanish and Navajo. We received the construction permit from the FCC in October 2014 for a low-wattage community radio station and are currently seeking funds to launch the station. We have 18 months from the issuance of the permit to be live on air.

The Sunnyside Longevity Project - This project (and its specific initiatives) are based, in part, on the findings of the 25-year Okinawa Centenarian Study, Blue Zones Study (as funded and supported by the National Geographic Magazine) and the Longevity Project (the Landmark Eight-Decade Study) as well as the Sunnyside-FMC Food Assessment (2012), the Sunnyside Hermosa Vida Neighborhood Assessment (2011), the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association Strategic Plan (2012-2017), and the Sunnyside Weed & Seed Strategy documents (1999 through 2012). We intent on implementing the findings for longevity found within these studies and turn the Sunnyside neighborhood into a LONGEVITY ZONE. Within the Sunnyside Longevity Project we have developed four (4) specific initiatives (1) a Sunnyside Community Certification in Basic Health, 2) a Community Health Care Worker Program, 3) a Community Healthy Neighbor Wellness Check Program and 4) a Sunnyside Farms Mobile Grocery Store Initiative) that, once implemented, will directly address issues of physical health AND economic health of residents within our community Specifically it is our intent over the course of five years to increase the longevity of the residents living in our neighborhood (by a minimum of 10 years) and decrease the level of poverty in our neighborhood by 25%. We are currently working on the establishment of a partnership between Flagstaff Medical Center and United Way of Northern Arizona and ourselves to advance this partnership (e.g. funding/a grant).

The Coconino County Mentorship Program for Probationers
We are currently in the process of trying to secure a contract for services through a partnership with Coconino County Probation to establish and run a Mentoring Program to train volunteers to provide mentoring to individuals who are on probation. The majority of the mentoring that will be provided by the volunteers to probationers will be done online/in a virtual setting. This program is unique in that there is nothing like it in the country.
