The Commissary, as a part of the original Tioga Lumber Company, was a vital part of the small community. The mill workers exchanged their tokens for groceries, dry goods and feed. The Commissary was in continual use until sold in the 1950's and was closed for good in 1981. The Commissary, which is on the National Register, has had little alteration since construction. Decay, vandals, neglect, and public apathy threatened the old building. Upon donation of the property to the Tioga Historical Society, and funding secured, the structure was restored and took on the life of a beautiful museum. The adjoining acres became the Tioga Heritage Park providing an excellent area for community functions.
Our 1913 Steam Engine, coal car & a caboose have arrived. Otis Belgard's Train Set including the town of Tioga, the Sawmill and Businesses, are set up and are in operation. We have 100 miniature civil war ships made by Bill Atteridge of Arcadia, La. and other Confederate memorabilia. Three small museums are located at the site: the original community barbershop, a dog-house containing miniature dogs made of a variety of materials, and a telecommunications building displaying a historical view of telephones and switch boards.
