Arts and Civic Engagement After School Program

TUCSON ARTS BRIGADE (TAB) is a nonprofit participatory service-based community arts and education organization.

TAB facilitates dialogue and employs arts-based solutions to complex civic and social issues, including graffiti, crime, drug use, bullying, empowering youth and elders, health and wellness, cultural diversity, and sustainable design. Working together with schools, neighborhoods, civic agencies, service providers, businesses, and other non-profit organizations, TAB is a national model for sustainable community development through the arts.

Our visual and performing arts programs empower youth and elders, promote stewardship, develop an appreciation for the intrinsic value of the arts, and help to promote the overall health, welfare, and livability of our community – creating a vibrant place to live and work. TAB integrates the values of “community service” with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility.

The arts are a gateway to achieve educational and interpersonal goals. Through the development of murals, dance, theater, puppetry, music, interdisciplinary arts, and special events, we offer whole-person educational solutions through arts integration with reading, writing, math, science, history, and more – aiming to raise the literacy rates, celebrate cultural diversity, and open the doors of possibility. The results are beautiful heartfelt works of art in all media.

Youth workshops, elder shares, field trips, and networking opportunities are all part of TAB’s unique collaborative design process. Participants learn applicable life skills to be successful by participating in TAB’s art-making process, such as patience, self-confidence, communication skills, leadership skills, financial literacy, developing a positive cooperative peer culture, valuing different viewpoints, meeting deadlines, translating ideas into workable solutions, stretching the imagination.

Tucson Arts Brigade is meeting the specific needs of the community by connecting the private and public sectors with neighborhood arts projects.

“The role of the arts community is critical to getting our country back on track and it will play a vital part in the economic and spiritual recovery of our nation. We thank you for taking the time to come to the White House and contribute to this cause.” ~ Matt Tranchin, The White House, Office of Public Engagement (June 2009)

“The mural that TAB painted on our wall has become an invaluable part of our business, making us a local landmark. The mural has also attracted us tens of thousands of dollars worth of marketing on TV, radio and in print.” ~ Josh Jacobsen, Lucky Wishbone
