Youth development and boatbuilding
The Urban Boatbuilders youth programs engage teens from within the juvenile justice system, charter schools, public schools and community programs. Youth participants from partner agencies gain skills, knowledge, confidence, responsibility while learning wood working and boat building skills in a mentored environment. Older youth participants, working as apprentices, also develop advanced wood working and boat building skills as well as mentoring, job readiness support and workforce orientation.
Urban Boatbuilders has two signature programs: Partner projects (schools, other agencies, juvenile correctional facilities, etc.) where youth learn skills to transform a pile of lumber into a seaworthy craft; and Apprenticeship, youth from previous partner projects who want to gain more skill, knowledge and strengths are hired for up to one year to work in our shop on a wide array of boats and build job readiness skills.
Volunteers come to Open Shop on Wednesday evenings and support the youth boatbuilding efforts and support Urban Boatbuilders in many other ways.
