The USAIGC “College Bound” Competitive Program Philosophy, Goals & Objectives

Philosophy
The USAIGC has moved in a different competitive direction, a directional change based on our competitive goals, a change that tackles two critical issues of a competitive club program: the demands of traininng and competition on the athlete leading to athlete burn out.

What direction is the USAIGC going in?

We have chosen a different and healthier path for the development of our competitive gymnasts, a program by our design that will allow our gymnasts the preparation time necessary to prepare for collegiate gymnastics. Collegiate Gymnastics is the "pot of goal" at the end of the gymnastics rainbow and this is our competitive programs primary objective!

To accomplish our objectives, the USAIGC has reorganized our competitive programs:
We have an optional only competitive program
We write our own competition requirements, rules and judging criteria.
We have adopted the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Collegiate Rules for our top competitive level and are building build a bridge from our entry level competitive program to the highest NCAA Premier Level.

At the heart of our Competitive program is the time factor and learning curve in the training of our gymnasts. Our program is based on gymnast longevity (keeping gymnasts in our sport and our clubs); we want to intentionally slow down the learning (curve) process of skills to allow the coach and athlete the necessary time needed to develop a long term training and skill development program. We want to adjust the competitive learning (curve) process so that our athletes “peak” around their junior high school year putting them into a perfect competitive position for the Collegiate Program.

USAIGC Gymnast benefits

During our gymnasts early / entry years, our program allows our gymnasts to spend less time in the gym training and more time on related and / or non-gymnastics activities. We feel that quality and not quantity is the most important part of developing gymnasts during their early years of development.
The intentional slowing down of the learning (curve) process takes the stress off our gymnasts and coaches, allowing them to focus on execution and long term skill development making a better, safer and healthier gymnast. This process allows the coach and gymnast the necessary time to work on lead-up skills; develop strength, flexibility, conditioning, and to continue to perfect execution. This process will have a major impact on reducing injuries because the most difficult of skills now can be mastered at a logical and safe pace.

It is our goal to maintain our athletes in our competitive program for 10+ years by creating a College Bound Program that allows time for learning, developing, success, growing up and FUN! It will provide our gymnasts with realistic and attainable goals under well planned training conditions that nuture athletes and keep them in our sport beyond the age of 13.
As an Association we must continue to provide our athletes with a program that is nourishing and appropriate for their age, levels and demands.
The USAIGC needs our Coaching Community to imbrace our goals, objectives and ideals.

What the USAIGC is not?

The USAIGC is not the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of gymnastics; USA Gymnastics is the National governing body. The NGB/USAG is responsible in developing elite level athletes for the purpose of developing our USA Olympic Teams every four years. The USAIGC supports the USAG and is a voting member in good standing on the USAG Board.

The USAIGC is not an Elite program. We do not follow the rules created by the FIG (Federation of International Gymnastics) because these rules are created for two International Competitions: the World Championships and Olympic Games.

We are a College Bound Competitive Program

We feel strongly that following rules that are created for Olympians and Elite gymnasts are not in the best interest of our USAIGC gymnasts and the USAIGC. The USAIGC will continue to create our own rules to meet our competitive goals and objectives. We are not an inferior program but a program with specific goals and objectives moving in a different direction.

Competitive Program Goals and Objectives

1. Jointly develop a USAIGC “membership driven” competitive program.
2. Create a College Bound competitive program that uses a “common sense approach” to rule development along with a “positive scoring system” for the self-esteem and self-worth of our gymnasts, a competive program designed for athlete longevity by incorporating an intentional slow down of the learning process of skills to allow our athletes to peak around their Junior year.
3. Provide competition for Individual Event Specialists up to the National Level.
4. Provide a competitive program that is educationally sound, progressively challenging and FUN!
5. Maintain a competitive philosophy that believes competitive events are not just about the competition; they are more importantly about the total experience for our gymnasts, their families, coaches and officials.
6. Showcase Collegiate Gymnastics, the premier competitive program in America!
