Platteville has a strong agricultural heritage and a culture of self-sufficiency. Couple this with our leading engineering and renewable energy programs at the university and it is only natural that we begin experimenting with locally-grown energy. Sunflower oil is a good fit for us as a starting point: sunflowers are hearty plants, make a great fuel, a super nutritious cooking oil, and can be grown with the same farming equipment as corn (which we have plenty of around here!). The pulp that remains once the oil is pressed out of the flowers makes an excellent high-protein cattle feed.
