Here is a basic care-sheet for our customers...
HABITAT: Sleeping area/lizard hammock, Grapevine from top to bottom of tank (for self-heat regulation). Substrate: Tile, Paper-Towels, “Reptile Carpet” or a calcium based fine-grain-sand if they don’t eat it on introduction to the new habitat (if they constantly eat or lick the sand, trash the sand and move to tile or another safe alternative. Digesting too much sand can cause “impaction” witch may lead to death). Natural sunlight 10-14 hrs a day OR, UV-B and UV-A bulbs with reflective hood 10-14 hrs a day (yes, this is absolutely necessary for digestion and health). Toys or artificial “half logs” for them to hide/burrow under (they need their own “things”). Metal reptile cage top and tank (glass or acrylic from 20-55 gallon). Keep in mind, if you go with natural sun-light, make sure sunlight shines in through the top of the lid. Glass tanks will deflect UVA and UVB from the sun that the dragons need to survive and digest properly. Hot and Cold sides of the habitat will also provide areas to regulate heat on their own. Remember, 10-14hrs of sun/UVA & B with a cold side of the tank. At night, you can use a red basking light to keep them warm. We DO NOT suggest Heat-Rocks, Heat-pads or other heat alternatives. These CAN cause skin-burns. You should also bathe your beardie in lukewarm water (no soap) to help with shedding and hydration. This is necessary for at least once a week/month for adults or, daily for hatchlings. Water dish and food bowl (cleaned thoroughly after every feeding). Let them out!!! Give them supervised exercise to keep them healthy, active and happy.
DIET: Beardies absolutely & 100% need Calcium supplement 3-4 times a week (recommend diet is every other 2 days)! The most diverse and fortified Calcium supplement available is “HERPTIVITE – Rep-Cal” (this product has Vitamin E, B3, B1 and a large list of other nutrients beardies need). Crickets, Dubai Roaches and Mealworms are a staple from hatchling to adult and can be “Shake and Baked” with calcium powder. You may also sprinkle the powder supplement on veggies and fruit as well. Make sure insects/food is the size of your beardies head/mouth or smaller. Hatchlings to 2 years need 75% insect to 25% veggie. 2+ years can be 50:50 and into older ages can be 75% veggie and 25% insect. This will vary from beardie to beardie because they each have their own likes and dislikes. The diet we suggest are guidelines not law, however the Calcium is absolutely necessary. Use these ratios at will and feel out your own diet plan for YOUR beardie. Variety is important!
RAW VEGGIES & FRUIT: Carrots (these are great for their color; beta-carotene brightens red and orange colors but also contains Vitamin A. Do not feed them carrots heavily, this can cause an overabundance of Vitamin A witch CAN be toxic in the long run). Strawberries, apples, raspberries, banana, collard greens, mustard greens, grapes, kiwi, celery leaf, mint leaf, broccoli, cucumber, Dandelions (leaf and flower), peas, green beans, kale, romaine (iceberg lettuce can cause binding and contains too much water and not enough nutrition). The best diet will have a mixture of the veggies and fruit such as a salad consisting of romaine, shredded carrots, and strawberries. Mixing is better than feeding just one of the fruits or veggies listed above. DO NOT FEED: Tomatoes, garlic, spinach leaf, spices and high-citrus fruit such as: pineapple, avocado, oranges, lemon, lime and grapefruit. These are toxic to Bearded Dragons.
HELPFUL ITEMS: Clean or new spray bottle. Dragons don’t need a lot of humidity but, need a lot of hydration at hatchling to 1 year old. You can mist them with a spray bottle or use an eye-dropper or syringe without the needle to hydrate them orally. “Cricket” or Plastic containers can be purchased at all local pet stores for the insects that you will be purchasing for your Beardie. More info can also be found in the book: “Your Happy Healthy Pet/Bearded Dragon” 2nd edition, by Steve Grenard. This is a great source of Diet, Health, and Habitat info of hatchlings to adult size beardies.
