We are the county shelter located in Mt. Carmel, IL with one ACO and a group of very dedicated volunteers. We are a 501c3 and licensed by the State of IL

The Wabash County Animal Shelter has rescued an average of nearly 500 dogs and cats per year which requires transportation to rescues, shelters, adoption centers and veterinarians. The Wabash County Animal Shelter is operated by volunteers known as the Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies (WCASB), a 501c3.

In 2009, the Kiwanis Club, with the help of the community, raised the funds for a new shelter built by volunteers. In April of 2010, the operation was moved into a first-class shelter with hours open for public adoptions – what a great success story. Currently less than 1.5% of pets have to be euthanized (and that is health reasons or ‘bite’ dogs).

The mission of the Buddies is to 1) find permanent homes for as many pets as possible, 2) secure medical attention for surrendered pets requiring such, and 3) provide educational programs on responsible pet ownership, sponsor microchip clinics, promote spay/neuter, and more.

The shelter is 100% staffed by volunteers so hours of operation vary. Messages left by phone are returned if there isn't a volunteer on site. Usually a volunteer is available most weekday mornings and again mid to late afternoons, but again that can vary depending on volunteer schedules
