Wenatchee River Institue at Barn Beach Reserve is excited to offer hands-on, locally-focused, inquiry-based educational activities - both inside and outside - that correlate with state science standards and local school district curriculum.
In the spring, 3rd graders from Osborn Elementary School in Leavenworth and Vale Elementary School in Cashmere come to BBR for field days in the weeks prior to the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest, a popular event held at the height of the neotropical bird migration in mid-May. They study local history, birds, entomology (arthropods), rocks, plants, composting with redworms, and cells and microorganisms with microscopes and stereoscopes.
In the fall, 4th graders from Osborn Elementary School in Leavenworth and Vale Elementary School in Cashmere come to BBR following class trips to the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival at the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery in September. Students study riparian plants, aquatic macroinvertebrates, water quality, mapping, fish & stream biology, and classification.
In the winter, Leavenworth 5th graders participate in winter field days at BBR. Outside (on snowshoes whenever possible), they study animal tracks and properties of water and snow, identify local landmarks, evergreen trees, and lichen, and navigate with maps, compasses, and GPS. Inside, they study weather and climate, fire ecology, food webs, magnification, and energy and matter - through labs that correlate with their science and geography lessons at school.
