Westland School is a small progressive K-6 elementary school in Los Angeles. Educating children for the 21st Century since 1949, Westland has developed an integrated, hands-on, social studies-based curriculum, instilling a love of learning in every child.

Perched on two scenic acres on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles, Westland School is a progressive elementary school attended by families from the Valley, Westside, and Hollywood. Since 1949, Westland has stayed true to its core values: child-centered education, strong, close-knit community and dedication to instilling a lifelong love of learning. In the midst of bustling L.A., Westland is a one-of-a-kind oasis of childhood education.

Westland's curriculum, based on the developmental and progressive principles of Dewey and Piaget, has a strong academic program with a social studies core integrated with classes in the arts, science, woodworking, gardening, and physical education. The school has a deep commitment to community involvement and environmental stewardship supported by its wooded campus, an inviting, natural setting that nurtures childhood and stimulates deep learning.

We maintain small classroom sizes of 20-22 students each with a 5 to 1 teacher-to-child ratio. We provide experiential learning, which fosters collaboration and group problem solving. With this progressive approach to learning, students work together to construct knowledge out of first hand experiences and research-based learning that is genuinely meaningful and develops a real understanding of how to learn, along with all the skills and knowledge children need now and in the future.
