Wheeler's Camps - (207) 692-6994

Spacious, private, rustic waterfront cottages for rent by the week June-October, in the heart of central Maine's Belgrade Lakes region

Wheeler's Camps was started by William and Eliza Wheeler in 1898 as a place to relax with friends and enjoy lake life. Their great-great-granddaughter Robyn is delighted to be able to carry on the tradition.

Located on a peninsula on 1048-acre Salmon Lake, these spacious, private cabins accommodate six people comfortably. Each is right on the water with its own dock, and a wood stove or fireplace. There is a cookout area for the all-important marshmallow sacrifice.
Kayaks and canoes are available free of charge for day use, or may be rented for the week. If serious fishing is on your agenda, you can rent a boat with a motor and match wits with the perch and bass. Other local wildlife includes loons, barred owls, bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, beaver, muskrat, and mink. We also see the occasional hawk, red fox, and moose. (No bears...yet!)

With a mile of shoreline and 100 acres of woods, the property feels secluded, but all the amenities of life are just a few miles away. There is an IGA grocery store, laundromat, library, a breakfast/brunch restaurant, and two pizza shops in downtown Oakland (about 4 miles from camp), and, just a few miles further, Waterville offers movie theaters, coffee shops, farmers' markets, several grocery stores, dozens of restaurants, and the usual big-box stores.

Our central Maine location is perfect for day-trips: hiking opportunities within a two-hour drive range from shorter nearby trails to parts of the Appalachian Trail, including Saddleback Mountain and Baxter State Park's Mount Katahdin. River rafting is also a popular activity in the region. The Maine coast is only a 1-hour drive from Oakland, and Mount Desert Island's Acadia National Park is a two-hour drive. Freeport, famous for its outlet stores, is an hour away, and Portland just a bit further.

However, it's quite possible that once you arrive and settle in, you will be perfectly content to stay put and enjoy a slower pace of life for a while.

For more information, or to make a reservation, email Robyn at wheelercamps@gmail.com or call 207-692-6994.

Rentals run from Saturday to Saturday. The rate is $775 per week plus 8% Maine lodging tax. Rental periods of less than a week are an option in May, June, and September.

The camps are Housekeeping Plan, with fully-equipped kitchens. Campers leave their cottages clean and ready for the next guests. Cleaning supplies are provided.

Maximum of six people per cabin, including children. Pets are allowed, with the usual common-sense guidelines.

If you need a quick internet connection, we do have wifi at the office; let us know and we will turn it on for you. Cell phone reception is generally good for most carriers.

The tap water is from a 120' deep well in the ledge in our woods, and is tested annually and excellent for drinking.
