William A. Onofry, PLLC - (845) 858-2364

The Law Firm of William A. Onofry, PLLC is a legal practice focused on estate and tax planning, real estate and business.

Opened in April, 2014, the Law Firm of William A. Onofry, PLLC continues a longstanding family tradition of serving clients within the Tri-State Area. A former associate of Robert A. Onofry (Cuddeback & Onofry) and partner of Bavoso, Plotsky & Onofry, Bill's developed business and personal relationships while practicing law in his hometown.

Honing in on the areas of estate planning, tax planning, real estate and business law, Bill works with clients and colleagues to prevent or address issues in their lives, and the lives of their loved ones or businesses. Bill brings a strong understanding of business, finance and management to the table. He knows how investments work, and the legalities of ownership and transition (by will, gifting, trust, etc.). He's also managed real estate, invested in non-traditional assets such as tax lien certificates, and created businesses of his own.

A unique aspect of Bill's practice is his interest and in-depth knowledge of taxes. While studying at Pace University School of Law, Bill keyed into the income and estate tax laws. Since then he's developed an approach unique to this side of the mountain that evaluates the property, income, estate, gift and generation-skipping tax effects of a business, estate or tax plan, or real estate purchase. After all, even "simple" plans have immense tax consequences. Failure to recognize them can wreak havoc on you, your business, partners or family.

When drafting trusts - either living/revocable or irrevocable, he builds in flexibility for the clients, fiduciaries and, to the extent possible, beneficiaries. In times like these, when the estate tax exemptions are in flux and creditors are gaining access to inherited assets, it's this flexibility that adds value to the clients and their plans.

Business succession is an area that's often overlooked, but Bill has the skills to help even long-time owners transition. Whether using buy-sell agreements, buy-outs, cross-purchase or other tactics, Bill can structure a plan that's responsive to your needs, yet proactive with respect to future changes.

Real estate is a personal passion for Bill. Not only does he enjoy helping people buy and sell. He's invested in real estate himself and understands the ins and outs of being both a homeowner and landlord. On top of that he's worked through tough title scenarios for his clients, resulting in favorable outcomes that position them to buy or sell insurable title. Collectively, this working knowledge puts Bill in a position to help clients negotiate, close or, if necessary, evict in a timely fashion.
