Williamsburg Virginia’s professional orchestra
The Williamsburg Symphonia's extensive education and outreach programs have delighted thousands of young people and earned the praise and gratitude of parents and teachers. Orchestral leaders and teachers alike believe that music encourages children to be more creative and strengthens listening and language skills. Each year our Symphonia orchestra members go to area schools to perform great music, and hundreds of families come to concerts specially designed for them.
The Williamsburg Symphonia was founded in 1984 by Carl Andersen, Elnore Andersen, Marian Harding, Mary Selby and Rebecca Siegel for the purpose of presenting educational programs for children featuring classical music (Peter and the Wolf was the first). Their initial performances were so well received that the founders planned a schedule of concerts for the general public. Under Music Director Janna Hymes, The Williamsburg Symphonia continues to introduce young audiences to classical music in a way they can enjoy and understand, and it presents subscription concerts and special events that attract a wide following and achieve critical acclaim.
Volunteerism is a fulfilling way to get involved behind the scenes with The Williamsburg Symphonia. Members of the Williamsburg Symphonia League work to further an appreciation of orchestral music - classical, romantic and modern - and the musical arts, to encourage its professional musicians and to create strong community support for the orchestra. Its volunteers are essential to the orchestra's operations and the achievement of its mission.
